Hagerman Elementary School announced that the American Theatre Wing, best known as the creator of the Antoinette Perry “Tony” Awards, is awarding the elementary drama program with a classroom resource grant from the Andrew Lloyd Webber Initiative.

The $20,000 award will purchase a new sound system, as well as microphones, lighting, and projectors for their auditorium. The equipment acquired will benefit the music program, the drama club, and all students attending the school, according to a press release from school officials. Hagerman has about 215 students in the elementary school serving Pre-K through fifth grade.

With the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation’s help, the American Theatre Wing invests in public schools to help drama teachers get more of the resources they need to provide quality drama instruction in their schools.

Through this classroom resource grant-giving program, funding is provided directly to under-resourced public schools to help create new and enhance existing theater programs.

“The recognition from the American Theatre Wing is a tremendous honor,” said Jessie Copeland, founder and sponsor of the drama club. “I began this drama club in 2018 with the hopes of giving our students a way to express themselves and learn a little bit about theatre. It has been such a great learning experience for them and myself. Each play we have put on has been great. The students continue to amaze me with their talent and joy for this craft.

“This money will help us tremendously with updating our auditorium. I still can’t believe we were chosen for this grant. I am so thankful.”
