The local housing authority will accept applications for federal rental assistance starting Friday.
According to an announcement by the Eastern Regional Housing Authority, Section 8 rental assistance applications will be available and accepted Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Occupational Technology Center, Room 124, on the Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell campus, 20 W. Mathis St.
Those unable to obtain and fill out an application on Friday can pick one up later at the ERHA offices at 106 E. Reed St., with the closing date for Chaves County being Friday, April 5. Applications also can be mailed. The EHRA office can be reached at 575-622-0881.
Section 8 assistance, which is available periodically as funds are released or recipients no longer need the assistance, comes from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and will help pay rent on houses or apartments if a person meets certain income eligibility requirements. The amount of assistance available depends on the applicant’s income.
According to the EHRA notice, families already on a Public Housing Authority Section 8 waiting list do not need to apply.
