A man is being sought by the Chaves County Sheriff’s Office in connection with a Tuesday afternoon shooting in Lake Arthur.

Jacob Montoya

Jacob Montoya, 29, of Lake Arthur, is believed to have shot his girlfriend at their residence during a domestic dispute, Sheriff Mike Herrington said Wednesday.

Herrington said the residence was somewhere in the vicinity of Broadway Street.

The victim was injured and transported to Artesia General Hospital. She was subsequently airlifted to a hospital in El Paso with what Herrington described as non-life threatening injuries.

A call about the shooting came into the sheriff’s office at 1:15 p.m. Monday. The victim was rushed to the hospital and Montoya was gone before deputies arrived on the scene, Herrington said. Investigators do not know what sparked the dispute.

Deputies were still in the process of obtaining a warrant for Montoya’s arrest as of Wednesday afternoon, Herrington said.

A message with a photo of Montoya was posted on the sheriff’s office Facebook page late Tuesday. Herrington said people have been calling in with tips and deputies are actively pursuing those leads in the hopes they will lead to Montoya’s capture and apprehension.

People with information that could lead to the whereabouts or capture of Montoya are urged to contact the Chaves County Sheriff’s Office at 575-624-6500 or Chaves County Crime Stoppers 1-888-594-8477.
