Our beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother passed away in her sleep, March 5, 2019. Mary was born June 16, 1925, to Arthur and Grace Hailey in Roswell, NM. Mary attended Roswell Business College where upon graduation she worked as a bookkeeper at JC Penney’s, Roswell Live Stock Ring and Atwood & Malone Attorneys. On the side she sold Luzier Cosmetics and with her bubbling personality quickly rose to District Manager for the State of NM.

She held every office in the Beta Sigma Phi sorority founded for the social, cultural, and civic enrichment of its members and remained a member up to her 80 birthday. She married Ralph Chesser on 12/15/50 at which time she became a farmer’s wife. There was little that she couldn’t do on the farm; she drove a tractor as well as any man. She became involved in the Make It Yourself With Wool competitions and quickly rose to Director for Lincoln and Chaves overseeing the largest (96 contestants) contest ever held. Within no time, she became the NM State president and within 2 years was the National President Coordinator, the first Woman to hold the office. She traveled to many countries with the contestants representing the USA.

After her husband, Ralph, died, she moved from the farm into Roswell and went to work at the First Interstate Bank. Mary was known for her outstanding cooking and baking skills, especially her Chocolate pie and fudge recipe, which she passed down to her granddaughter. She never passed up a Bridge, SkipBo, Gin Rummy or 42 game and rarely let family or others win. In 1995 she moved to Dallas, TX to be near her daughter and grandchildren. She married David Hitt, the CEO of Methodist Hospital, when she turned 80. Mr. Hitt passed away in 2017.

Surviving to cherish Mary’s memory is her daughter, Priscilla Lane and her husband, Frank Allen, of Richardson, TX; a son, David Chesser of Denver, CO; a granddaughter, Leisha Cadwallader, and husband, Todd, their daughter Taylor and son Dylan of Frisco, TX; a grandson, Alan Marshall, and wife, Thu, their son Easton and daughter Piper of Frisco, TX; a sister, Janice Marr, and husband, Roger, of Las Cruses, NM; a sister-in-law, Patsy Chesser, of Roswell, NM, and many many nieces and nephews.

Preceding Mary in death were her husbands; her mother and father; 3 brothers and 4 sisters.
