The Roswell Correctional Center was placed on lockdown Monday night, following a fight between inmates.

A post on the New Mexico Corrections Department Facebook page Tuesday morning stated that the Correctional Center on West Chickasaw Road in Hagerman was on lockdown “until further notice.” The Correctional Center is operated by the state of New Mexico.

Lockdown is when all prisoners are confined to their cells or living quarters, denied visitors and typically are not allowed to make or receive phone calls, Ashley Espinoza, public affairs coordinator with the Corrections Department said.

She added that no inmates were injured in the Monday night fight and no corrections officers were involved in the altercation.

“It’s just a small fight between a few inmates and nothing major,” Espinoza said.

The lockdown went into effect at 9 p.m. Monday and ended at noon Tuesday, according to Espinoza.

Reuben Benavidez, the warden at the Correctional Center, said Tuesday morning the lockdown was a precautionary measure taken while an investigation into the fight was conducted. He added that the investigation was set to wrap up around noon.

Later, calls to Benavidez to inquire about the circumstances surrounding the fight and results of the investigation were not returned before press time Tuesday.
