A party early Sunday morning just north of Roswell ended with 56 arrests, including several who face felony charges of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and providing alcohol to minors.

The Chaves County Sheriff’s Office received a call at 1:45 a.m. Sunday that a large and loud party was underway at 6249 N. Main St., just north of the city limits and that attendees below the age of 21 were drinking alcohol at the party, according to a post on the Facebook page of the Chaves County Sheriff’s Office.

Charles Yslas, chief deputy with the Chaves County Sheriff’s Office and other deputies went to the location in response to the call.

When they arrived on the scene, deputies observed approximately 40 vehicles and 100 people outside.

“Once the deputies were seen, several people ran on foot from the deputies, so additional manpower was requested,” the post states. Officers from the Roswell Police and the New Mexico State Police provided assistance to the deputies.

One individual who physically resisted arrest was pepper-sprayed but all other arrests were made without incident, the post states.

Herrington said in the post that as sheriff, he will not tolerate such parties or those adults who host them. He added that he has seen murders, rapes, fights, people driving while intoxicated and accidental overdoses at juvenile parties.

“BE WARNED, if you participate or host these parties, we are coming for you,” Herrington stated in the post.
