One man is dead after a two-vehicle crash Thursday morning that temporarily closed down the southbound lanes on the Roswell Relief Route.

Shavan Alexander Davey, 26, of Roswell, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene by the Office of the Medical Investigator, according to a press release from the New Mexico State Police.

The collision happened at about 3:57 a.m. at the intersection of Roswell Relief Route and McGaffey Street near milepost 7, according to the release.

Initial findings from the investigation into the crash suggest that a 2018 Dodge Charger driven by a 27-year-old male from Dexter was traveling west on McGaffey when he approached the intersection of Roswell Relief Route, according to the release.

The Charger then ran the stop sign for reasons still under investigation and struck a 2017 Chevrolet Camaro driven by Davey. The driver of the Charger was transported to a local hospital to be treated for unknown injuries, the release states.

The crash remains under investigation, according to the release. Based on the outcome of the investigation, the driver of the Charger could face charges. State Police did not disclose the name of the Charger driver.

According to the release, alcohol does not appear to have been a factor in the crash and seat belts appear to have been properly used.

The southbound lanes on Roswell Relief Route were closed to traffic during the morning while State Police were on the scene investigating the crash.

An email at 9:30 a.m. from Dusty Francisco, public information officer for the New Mexico State Police, announced that the southbound lanes on Roswell Relief Route were reopened.
