State and local officials, along with friends and family of Sgt. Christopher A. Sanders, will gather Tuesday for a memorial dedication of the pedestrian bridge that crosses North Main Street in front of New Mexico Military Institute Pearson Auditorium.
The dedication will take place from 9-9:30 p.m. according to a press release from the department of transportation.
North Main Street will be closed from College to 19th Street for up to two hours for the dedication, a New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) spokesperson confirmed last week. Motorists are asked to seek an alternate route.
Sgt. Christopher A. Sanders, a native of Roswell and a graduate of New Mexico Military Institute, was killed while serving his country on Jan. 9, 2008. The State Transportation Commission last April unanimously approved dedicating the pedestrian bridge as the “Sgt. Christopher A. Sanders Memorial Bridge.”
“Sgt. Christopher A. Sanders served the United States of America and his community of New Mexico in an exceptional manner and will always be remembered for his bravery, dedication and distinguished service,” said Tim Parker, NMDOT District II Engineer. “The naming of this bridge in his honor is a way for us to thank him and his family for his service as well as to remember what the military does for us on a daily basis near and afar.”
