The first phase of a street rehabilitation project on South Atkinson Avenue began Monday.

The project area is between East McGaffey and East Bland streets.

Traffic will continue to flow along Atkinson during the work as the initial phase of the project features concrete replacement for sidewalks, driveways and curbs and gutters. The work for this portion of the project will require the closure of the shoulders (one side at a time) of Atkinson, but traffic lanes will remain open.

Motorists are reminded, however, to use extra caution and be aware of workers when passing through the area. Crews from contractor J&H Services will work on the east side of Atkinson first, beginning at McGaffey and working their way north to Bland.

This first phase of the work is expected to be completed near the end of May. Following that, the project will move on to milling and paving of the street surface along that section of Atkinson. Further traffic impacts are expected at that time.

The entire project is tentatively scheduled to be completed by the end of August, but the final date could be adjusted depending on weather and other factors.
