Young artists with wings

Five community members give their discerning eyes to more than 600 drawings by local school children, kindergarten to fifth grade, who participated in the Dragonfly Festival Art Contest. Three top entries from each grade were selected for recognition, and a “best of show” winner will be announced at a ceremony later this month, with his or her artwork used to promote the 18th annual festival to be held at Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge the first weekend of September. Judges at the refuge’s Visitors Center Wednesday morning were, clockwise from lower left, Donna Oracion of Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell, City Manager Joe Neeb, community volunteer Jamie Boling, Chaves County Commissioner Dara Dana and Beverly Allen with the local office of U.S. Sen. Tom Udall. (Lisa Dunlap Photo)
