There’s no getting around it, today is one of the most special days on the calendar: Mother’s Day. Everybody that is walking, talking and breathing has a mother. We at RDR sports want to celebrate the women who have allowed their children to give Chaves County great sports memories throughout the year and say thank you.
The RDR sports department wanted to do something different this year, as always. We try to reach moms that are in the fight every day, just to be good moms and do the right things for their families. We sought out coaches’ wives, who often hear criticism of their husbands from the media, parents and sometimes the players. Last year, RDR sports interviewed Nancy Lopez and Gerina Piller for Mother’s Day.
With that in mind, the RDR sports wanted to give Mother’s Day a local flavor and interview Goddard’s Stella Martinez, the wife of Goddard soccer coach, Jamie Martinez and Suanne Mestas, the wife of boys’ basketball coach, Anthony Mestas.
Each mother brought something different to this story and provided insights into what it’s like to try and raise kids in today’s world while instilling lasting values that will carry their children long after they quit playing sports.
What we found is what works for one mother doesn’t always work for another. From Stella Martinez, we learn the value of encouraging her children to be who they are in letting them go chase their dreams.
From Suanne Mestas, it’s all about believing in the future of her children with their best days ahead of them. From Julie Stokes, it’s about always being there with and for her children and raising God-fearing children. Finally, the most inspirational story is that of Meghan Manzanares, turning tragedy into triumph with unwavering faith in God.
