New Mexico law enforcement agencies are running their annual seat belt enforcement effort until June 2.

During the “Click It or Ticket” campaign, law enforcement officers will step up enforcement of seat belt and child safety seat laws. Last year during the campaign, state law enforcement officers handed out more than 1,400 seat belt citations and 75 child restraint citations.

During the entire year, they issued 10,000 seat belt citations and almost 1,400 child restraint citations.

“Seat belts save lives, and everyone, front seat and back, children and adults, need to remember to buckle up every trip, every time,” said Transportation Secretary Michael Sandoval.

In New Mexico, there were 2,284 unbelted people hurt or killed in crashes from 2013 to 2017.
