One man was killed early Tuesday morning in a two-vehicle crash on U.S. 82 east of Artesia.

Francisco Adame Montemayor, 21, of Cleburne, Texas sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased on the scene by the Office of the Medical Investigator, according to a news release from the New Mexico State Police.

The accident occurred at about 6:09 a.m. near mile post 117 when a 2017 Ford heading west crossed over the center line and into eastbound traffic for unknown reasons.

The release states that the Ford then rammed into the side of a 2018 Freightliner commercial vehicle traveling east.

A passenger in the Ford was transported to Artesia General Hospital with minor injuries. The release states that the driver of the commercial vehicle — a 49-year-old Roswell man — was not injured.

Alcohol does not appear to have been a contributing factor in the crash, but it is believed that seatbelts were not properly utilized by the driver or passenger of the Ford, the release states.
