A man and an 11-year-old girl were transported to a local hospital Sunday night after sustaining injuries in a four-vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 285.

The accident happened at about 10 p.m. Sunday near milepost 91, said Dusty Francisco of the New Mexico State Police on Monday. He added that the weather conditions and reckless driving were all contributing factors in the accident.

An initial investigation by State Police indicates a 2001 red Cadillac was stuck in the median due to heavy rain. Two vehicles — a 2006 Grey Chevy pickup and a 2006 white Ford pickup — stopped to help the Cadillac.

All three of the vehicles were parked in a line next to the median when a 2017 grey Nissan driven by Jesus Robles, 34, of Roswell approached the Nissan for unknown reasons, then struck the parked Ford pickup and caused it to crash into the parked Chevy, Fransisco said.

Robles was transported to a hospital with unknown injuries after being extracted from his vehicle by emergency personnel. An 11-year-old female who was standing on the shoulder was struck by one of the vehicles and was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

A 9-year-old male child seated in the parked Chevy pickup was not injured, Fransisco said.
