An Arroyo and Small Stream Flood Advisory was issued at 1:39 p.m. Tuesday for southwestern Chaves County by the National Weather Service in Albuquerque

The National Weather Service states that Dopler radar at 1:38 p.m. indicated heavy rain due to thunderstorms. This will cause arroyo and small streams flooding in the advisory area. The advisory states up to two inches have already fallen.

Rio Felix, Rio Penasco and Eagle Creek are among the streams that could experience flooding, according to the advisory.

Both localized and distant heavy rainfall will create dangerous flows in arroyos and over low water crossings. Do not attempt to drive through these waters. Water in arroyos may travel many miles and take hours to reach your location from upstream rain areas,” the advisory states.

People are asked to remain alert, even in locations that do not receive rain.
“Arroyos, streams and rivers can become raging currents in a matter of minutes, even from distant rainfall,” the advisory states.
