MARY LOU VANZANDT, 47, passed from this life on Friday, June 7, 2019, in Zion, IL. She has entered the Kingdom of Heaven through our Lord Jesus Christ. Please take a moment to share a thought or memory with Mary’s family at www.andersonbethany.com.

On March 28, 1972, Mary Lou was born in Fort Stockton, TX, to loving parents, Mike and Cora Hernandez. She was raised in Hagerman, NM, and attended Hagerman High School until 1989. Mary earned her GED in 1991 and went on to complete the Phlebotomy Program thru ENMUR and become ASCP certified. She was a loving fulltime mother who also worked various jobs to help support the family, including Chewning Footwear and Comfort Keepers. Mary’s passion was caring for people and working in healthcare. Her lifelong dream was to work in a hospital setting, and she did that as a phlebotomist at Lovelace Regional Hospital-Roswell for four years. She always loved caring for her children and grandchildren, which was how she enjoyed spending her free time. Mary relocated to Ottumwa, Iowa, in 2015 and was married to Kurt VanZandt. She returned to school at Indian Hills Community College and earned her Associate Degree in Health Sciences as an MLT in 2018. Mary achieved her degree while fighting cancer after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2017. She was part of Bosom Buddies, a breast cancer support group and was very grateful to all the members that supported her. Mary gave the honorary survivor speech at the annual Race for The Cure event in Ottumwa, in May of 2018. She was very appreciative of her care at the Cancer Treatment Center of America in Zion, IL. They were professional, compassionate, and set the standard for cancer care. Mary was grateful for the support of her family and the community in Ottumwa, Iowa.

Special thanks for the support of Sherry, Elaine and Deb, and the laboratory staff at Ottumwa Regional Health Center. Whether it was watching the children, pet sitting the puppy, sending meals for the family, mowing the lawn, getting children from one place to another, or just talking to her; Mary remembered and appreciated everything. She was living the life she intended to live and courageously fought cancer every step of the way. Mary conquered her fears thru Christ and remained steadfast in her faith.
