Rotary Sun Classic Golf Tournament organizers announced Friday that this year’s tournament honoree will be the late Judge Alvin F. Jones, and the primary beneficiary of the event will be the Chaves County CASA Program.

Jones was a judge, lawyer and devoted community member who died May 28. He founded the local CASA program in 1997.

“Judge Jones founded our program and inspired us for 32 years,” said Carrie-Leigh Cloutier, CASA executive director. “In his spirit, we will continue to help thousands of children each year.”

Jones’ widow, Linda Jones, added her own sentiments. “CASA held a very special place in Alvin’s heart and I’m sure he would be touched by this gesture,” she said.

Now in its 29th year, the Rotary Sun Classic Golf Tournament is a 36-hole, PGA-sanctioned, pro-am tournament that will be played July 19-21 at Nancy Lopez Golf Course at Spring River.

During its history the tournament has raised almost $1 million for charitable causes in Chaves County, according to a press release from tournament organizers.

CASA requested funding for the creation of a trauma-informed crisis response team. It will be a team of victim advocates, social workers, law enforcement officials and CASA’s own Courthouse Dog teams specially trained to deal with children in the aftermath of public shootings and mass casualty events.

The CASA program was selected after a careful review of more than a dozen requests from local nonprofit groups, according to the press release.

The Rotary Sun Classic is presented annually by the Roswell Rotary Club and the Pecos Valley Rotary Club. More information is available at sunclassicgolf.com.
