An early morning fire scorched the exterior of the AmeriPride Linen & Uniform Services building in the 500 block of North Virginia Avenue Friday.

Roswell Fire Department received word of smoke and flames coming from the building situated across from the Chaves County Courthouse shortly before 4 a.m., according to Todd Wildermuth, public information officer with the fire department.

“Roswell Fire Department responded and had the fire knocked out in less than an hour with the exception of doing some final work on hot spots,” Wildermuth stated in an email.

No one was injured in the fire, but some outer walls of the building were blackened by the fire and at 8:30 a.m. the air was still thick with smoke.

The cause of the fire and where it started remains under investigation, according to Wildermuth.

Multiple roads near the fire were temporarily closed, in order to keep the public at a safe distance from the fire and prevent fire hoses in the road from being damaged by vehicles.

Wildermuth said he did not know which roads specifically were closed, but according to a post on the fire department’s Facebook page all streets were reopened by 8:20 a.m.
