A Carlsbad man was transported to a hospital Sunday with unspecified injuries after the motorcycle he was driving struck a cow on State Road 285.
The accident happened at 8:28 a.m. Sunday at mile post 95 in Chaves County. A 42-year-old man was heading southbound on a 2015 Harley Davidson when a cow entered the southbound lanes, and the motorcycle struck the cow, according to a press release from the New Mexico State Police.
A helicopter later airlifted the driver of the motorcycle to a hospital with unspecified injuries. Officer Dusty Francisco, a spokesperson for the New Mexico State Police, said information he received indicates the cow was killed in the crash.
The injured driver is not believed to have been wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, the press release stated.
The accident prompted a shutdown of both the north and southbound lanes on State Road 285 from 8:48 a.m. until 10:13 a.m.
