Way Way Off-Broadway Theatre Company has another success

Roswell-area theater audiences were on their feet at the weekend premiere of Way Way Off-Broadway Theatre Company’s latest production of “Mamma Mia!” The show features the songs of ‘70s pop group ABBA, and tells the hilarious story of a young woman’s search for her birth father. The show enjoyed a long run on Broadway and was made into a feature film in 2008.

The Roswell cast, led by Jessica Haynes as Donna (played by Meryl Streep in the feature film version) and Elissa Featherstone as her daughter Sophie, invited the audience to get out of their seats and sing along with the cast in the musical’s finale, which included the title song “Mamma Mia!” and the ever-popular “Dancing Queen.”

Gayle Dixon-Willden directed the show, with choreography by Summer Souza and musical direction by Devon Bullock. “This cast is incredible,” Dixon-Willden said, who is a veteran director but is in her directorial debut with WWOB, “their energy is contagious, and you can’t help but sing and dance along by the end.”

After the performance was complete, Haynes thanked the audience for coming and reminded them that there’s a lot more theater coming from WWOB in 2019. The audience then got to join the cast on the stage for pictures and congratulations.

“Mamma Mia!” is the 18th production from WWOB, and runs through June 30. Performances are Friday and Saturday evenings at 7 p.m. and on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center on the Eastern New Mexico-Roswell campus. For more information, visit waywayoffbroadway.com.
