City says fake letters issued about weed violations

Some local citizens have recently received anonymous letters mailed to them claiming the recipients are in violation of the city of Roswell’s weed ordinance that prohibits residents from allowing weeds on their properties to grow taller than 12 inches.

These unsigned letters on plain paper are not official notices of violations and have not been sent by the city. However, a city office return address has been used on the envelopes in which the letters were mailed. The city does not know who is authoring these letters.

The public should be aware that any official letter or notice regarding non-compliance with the weed ordinance or any other city nuisance ordinance enforced by the Code Enforcement Division of the Community Development Department will appear on official city letterhead from the Community Development Department. It will also include the name of the appropriate Code Enforcement officer handling the specific case to which the letter refers. It also includes the phone number for the department.

Anyone who receives correspondence regarding weeds or other property issues covered in city ordinances can call Community Development at 575-637-6280 to check on whether the letter came from the city.
