David Lee Smith, 66, passed away on June 25th, 2019 peacefully with family by his side in Austin, Texas. He was born July 2nd, 1952 in Odessa Texas to Gereld and Anne Smith.

When David was five, his family moved to Anaco, Venezuela. He loved living there and was often seen with his pet parrot sitting on his shoulder. Three years later his family moved to Maracaibo, Venezuela. At age 15, David traveled to the US to attend New Mexico Military Institute. After getting homesick, he returned to Venezuela and graduated from Roberts School where he was voted most friendly and most class spirit. David loved Venezuela and made many lifetime friends while there. After a few years he was drafted into the Army and served two years. After that, and moving around a lot David settled in Roswell, NM. He retired after 30 years at the United States Post Office, which was his longest commitment in life. He always wanted to return to Austin and finally made it back in 2018. Throughout life David was loved by many. He was easy-going, kind-hearted, had a great sense of humor and was an avid animal lover. David was a loving “Dippy” to his four grandchildren who brightened the last years of his life. He never met a stranger and most likely would have been voted most friendly in life as he was in high school.

He is preceded in death by his parents. David is survived by his daughter, Breanna and husband, Christopher Compian and their two children of Austin, Texas; his son, Darr and wife Jeannie Smith and their two children of El Paso, Texas; his older brother Gregg Smith of Austin, Texas; his loving ex-wife, and mother of his children, Mindi Darr of Roswell, New Mexico, and many other loving family members.

David wished to remain in the mountains, so his ashes, along with the ashes of his favorite dog Badger, will be spread at a later date with a celebration of life.
