About 125 athletes competed in Saturday’s 36th annual Bottomless Triathlon. Participants swam 400 meters, biked 8 miles and ran 2.5 miles at the Bottomless Lakes State Park.

Jeffrey Boyd of Albuquerque won the men’s category just 13 seconds ahead of Bakersfield, California triathlete Roberto Quintero. Roxanne Wegman, a Captain in the Army currently at Fort Bliss was back to claim her third consecutive championship in the women’s division with a comfortable margin over second place finisher Shannon Zanelli of Albuquerque.

While athletes from Albuquerque and El Paso crowded the field, Roswell had two athletes in the top 10. Aaron Colyer was seventh in the men’s category and Karen Andrews was 10th in the women’s field.

In the three-person relay division, “Team Coates” from Roswell consisting of James, Brenda and their daughter Reonnah won top honors against eight other teams.

There was also a new category this year called the “AquaBike” Race. Director Perry Toles explains that “instead of the swim, bike, run, the AquaBike is a swim, bike and done.” Toles said he added the category after realizing many athletes have to give up running but can still swim and bike.
