Entrepreneurs from Hobbs have purchased some land on North Main Street, with plans to develop it for retail.

“We are planning a retail center, and beyond that I am not willing to say at this time,” said Nadeem Kassis.

He said that he and his brother, Jack Kassis, run about nine different enterprises. Two of those are a Firehouse Subs restaurant owned by both of them and zk express, an auto repair and tire service. Both are located in Hobbs.

Chaves County records show that a lot just north of the Roswell Daily Record was purchased from the news company by Kass Investment Group LLC on July 1. Nadeem is listed as the agent of that corporation.

The lot has been given the name Kass Plaza Midtown Roswell Subdivision for county record purposes.

Speaking about the prospective sale of the property in June, Roswell Daily Record Publisher Barbara Beck said that transaction does not entail the sale of the newspaper, which was founded in the 1800s and purchased by her family in the 1930s.

“In a time when smaller newspapers have gone through round after round of layoffs,” she said, “we will continue to be here supporting our local community and providing a place where you can read news, sports and information as a daily newspaper.”
