Youth show their ‘horse sense’

The Chaves County 4-H & FFA Fair Horse Show brought out 18 area youth Saturday evening to the Bob Crosby Arena at the Eastern New Mexico State Fairgrounds to demonstrate their showmanship and horse-handling skills. Participation is up this year, says superintendent Georgia Bader, who said that the annual competition is intended for youth to have fun, learn about horse showing, improve as riders and become responsible. Above, Josie Pirtle, competing in the youngest category called Boosters, leads her horse to be inspected by Judge LuAnn Underwood during a showmanship and halter event. Below, several youth, including Makayla Kormendy, in foreground with her horse, Val, stand outside the arena as they wait to compete. The county youth fair officially begins today.
