Cross country season begins with 2K Blast

Students from area elementary and middle schools will be participating in the annual “2K Blast” on Saturday, Aug. 24th.

Hosted at Gateway Christian School, the runners will start and finish on the track but run 2,000 meters on dirt trails in the fields south of the school.

Boys and girls will compete in their own division for individual awards. The athletes will also be divided up according to grade level with the middle school students starting first, then the elementary students starting a minute later. The top schools will be taking home traveling trophies based upon the top five fastest times in each of the four divisions.

The current school champions are: Elementary Boys – East Grand Plains; Elementary Girls – Del Norte; Middle/Junior High Boys – Hagerman; and Middle/Junior High Girls – Berrendo.

Organizers said there were 125 participants last year and has grown every year since it started in 2012. Free online registration for the students is made possible by Sycamore Storage Solutions, Spring River Apartments and Cielo Grande Veterinary Center.

The morning starts off at 8 a.m. with a 2K fun run for adults called the Roswell-X. The 2K Blast begins at 9 a.m. and a high school scrimmage meet begins at 10 a.m.

Turtle Marathon races set for Aug 31

The Roswell Recreation Department will host the annual Turtle Marathon Saturday, Aug. 31. The multiple-race event begins at the National Guard Armory parking lot at No. 1 W. Earl Cummings Loop.

The event, featuring a competitive marathon, half-marathon, 10K walk, 10K run, 5K run and 5K walk, will be on the road that runs around the outside of the Roswell International Air Center.

The marathon and half-marathon will begin at 6 a.m. The 10K run, 10K walk, 5K run and 5K walk begin at 8 a.m. All races will start at the National Guard Armory parking lot.

Participants will compete in nine age divisions for both men and women in all events.

A registration fee applies on or before Aug. 30. There is no race-day registration. For more information, call 575-624-6719.

Youth volleyball league will play in September

Registration for the Youth Coed Volleyball League for boys and girls, ages 7-12 is under way. Regular registration is open through Aug. 25.

To view registration fees — or register online — go to RoswellConnect.com. Those wishing to register or volunteer as a coach can also go by the Roswell Recreation and Aquatic Center.

Registration will be allowed after the Aug. 25 deadline, but there will be an additional charge per participant.
