A free workshop about infant and early childhood development will be offered in Roswell next month.

The New Mexico Department of Health, the University of New Mexico’s Family Development Program and the FOCUS Initiative of the Children, Youth and Families Department are presenting a workshop based on “Mind in the Making: The Seven Essential Life Skills Every Child Needs” by Ellen Galinksy.

The two-day workshop will occur Thursday, Sept. 12, and Friday, Sept. 20, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. It will be held at the local New Mexico Department of Health Offices, 9 East Challenger St., at the Roswell International Air Center. A free copy of Galinsky’s book will be provided, as will lunch and snacks. Attendance both days is required.

The workshop is meant for people who work with children. It will cover infant and early childhood brain development as described by prominent researchers and will explore how to promote the seven essential skills: focus and self-control; perspective taking; communicating; making connections; critical thinking; taking on challenges; and self-directed, engaged learning.

Participants will receive a copy of “Mind in the Making” and 16 hours of Continuous Quality Improvement or competencies credits.
