One team is being hunted this season with high expectations: Goddard. The other team is young and in the position to get after it: Roswell. On Thursday when it all settled, Goddard was just a little bit better, capitalizing on a corner kick for the second time in the game to win over rival Roswell, 2-1, with 1:50 into overtime at Goddard Soccer Stadium.

“It is going to come down to this,” Jamie Martinez said. “This is what we trained for. This is what the fans want, the game could have gone either way. They’re (Roswell) a good team. I can’t say anymore — Roswell played tough. We had the job the majority of the time on their side.”

Roswell scored first in the first half when Mariana Maldonado scored on a penalty kick with 21:58 left in the first half to give Roswell a 1-0 lead. The goal was preceded when a Goddard player was trying to get the ball and ended up being called for a foul. The Goddard player was injured and taken out of the game and remained out. Goddard’s player will be OK with a little rest and with them not playing until next Thursday.

Roswell had the lead at halftime, 1-0. In the second half, Goddard scored on a corner kick from the left side of the field with 37:05 left in the game. It was a hard-fought match and it ended up, 1-1. Both teams played evenly on each side of the other’s field. Roswell had their share of shots on Goddard’s goal in the first half and Goddard had their share of shots on the Roswell side of the field in the second half.

“Two separate mistakes on the corner,” Roswell coach Samantha Ward said. “It was simple mistakes. Our girls knew they had to come back and play really hard. Goddard is a good team. We’re so young. We just have to rebound and come back hard — we go to Los Lunas on Saturday. It’s a tough loss, we have to put it in the past and move on.”
