Kaleigh Hembree, in glasses, and Natalie Edwards learn about garden herbs and how they can be used in recipes, including meatballs, during a Saturday meeting of the Pecos Valley Youth Garden Club held at the Chaves County Extension Office on East Chisum Street. Renate “Renie” Reisel, at top left, leads the instruction. Allene Hardcastle also participates in the lesson. Part of the day’s discussions also focused on the flower and plant show that will occur as part of the Eastern New Mexico State Fair. Reisel showed the youth attending how judges mark off for such things as water spots or insect larvae. Reisel will hold a “Make It and Take It” flower design workshop during the fair for adults and children. It will occur from 3 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday in the Arts and Crafts Building. Contact Reisel at reniereisel@gmail.com for more information about the youth club or the flower design workshop. (Lisa Dunlap Photo)
