The Xcel Energy Foundation is providing $38,700 in grant funding to five Roswell-area nonprofits working to boost STEM education and economic sustainability.

“The success of our communities is directly tied to our efforts to provide educational opportunities for our young people, create jobs, improve quality of life and in making sure no one is left behind in our progress,” said Mike McLeod, Xcel Energy regional manager for Community and Economic Development in Roswell. “Our goal is to support the nonprofits that do so much to build up our community.”

The foundation’s education grants are aimed at boosting educational systems and programs that focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM. Groups receiving funding have developed programs that provide hands-on learning opportunities that demonstrate the linkages between math and science, real-world applications and future careers. The economic sustainability grants support programs that promote workforce development, workforce readiness, specific job skills training, job placement and job creation.

Education grant recipients were: New Mexico Mesa Inc., Chaves County CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate), Boys and Girls Clubs of Chaves and Lincoln Counties and the Roswell Museum and Arts Center Foundation.

The economic sustainability grant recipient was the Midway Youth and Family Developmental Center.
