Nathan Aguilar fashions a Christmas ornament from foil and reprints of artwork during Saturday’s 25th anniversary celebration of the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art on East College Boulevard. Family members Aurora Jiminez and Kash Aguilar work on their projects, while elsewhere in the museum, people participated in drawing and painting activities, shared remembrances about their experiences with the museum and its founders, and enjoyed the art. Built as a business workshop, the building opened as a public exhibition space in 1994 dedicated to the work of participants in the Roswell Artist-in-Residence program, which began in 1967.

The museum is recognized as a unique institution for its collection, says Dameron Midgette of Santa Fe, executive director of the museum and a member of the Donald B. and Sally Anderson family. “Normally there is a theme or a genre or a medium,” he said. “This is all just pieces of people who have been here working as residents. For me, the vitality of it and the creativity of it, with almost no other commonality, is just really special.”
