An officer-involved shooting occurred Monday in Roswell, leaving one criminal suspect hospitalized with injuries.
The name of the male who was shot and is currently hospitalized was not being released since he has not yet been formally charged with a crime yet, Todd Wildermuth, public information officer with the Roswell Police Department said in an email Monday.
A press release issued states no police personnel were injured, including the officer who opened fire, were injured.
The shooting happened after Roswell Police officers responded to a call at about 3 p.m. of an attempted armed robbery in the 900 block of East Second Street involving a male suspect and female victim.
An officer later found the suspect on foot in the 1100 block of Brown Street. When he tried to make contact with the suspect, the officer allegedly discharged his weapon and the attempted armed robbery suspect was struck.
The officer, whose identity was not disclosed by police, will be placed on administrative leave while the New Mexico State Police investigate the shooting, which is standard procedure for investigations into officer- involved shootings.
Monday’s incident is the Roswell Police Department’s first officer-involved shooting of 2019, Wildermuth said.
