Way Way Off-Broadway Theater Company treated audiences to a great time at the performances of their latest musical production, “Chicago,” this past weekend at the Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell Performing Arts Center. Guests were on their feet by the end of the performances to cheer the cast — led by Jessica Haynes and Summer Souza as Chicago’s sultry murderesses, Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly. Done in the jazz style of original Broadway director Bob Fosse, the performers carried the show with edgy confidence.
Director Tony Souza, who also hosts the show, praised the cast and the production team for a stellar performance. “I’m so proud of this group of people. This is not an easy show to perform since it takes a lot of energy to sing and dance at the same time, but they make it look easy.”
“Chicago” is WWOB’s 20th production since beginning in 2015. “We always try and offer a balanced season of shows,” said Souza. “‘Chicago’ was our chance to do something for our adult audiences. There’s nothing terribly inappropriate in this show, but it’s definitely a show to leave the young ones home and enjoy a night out at the theater.”
Roswell audiences have three more chances to catch a performance of “Chicago,” with evening performances on Nov. 15 and 16 at 7 p.m. and on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. at the ENMU-R Performing Arts Center, 52 University Blvd.
