The second annual Veterans Day Recognition Ceremony at Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell Thursday focused on the service of Manuel “Marty” R. Martinez, 97, a Marine platoon sergeant and Bronze Star and Silver Star recipient. Son Mike Martinez, an Army veteran, standing at left, and nephew Louis Maestas, standing at right, spoke about his World War II service and the service of other veterans. Martinez was a member of the 4th Marine Division unit that fought on four beachheads in the Pacific Theater, including Saipan, Tinian, Roi-Namur and Iwo Jima. He also took command of Regimental Combat Team 25 after one battle on Iwo Jima resulted in the death or injury of all the commanding officers. His award commendations praised his “gallantry and intrepidity” as well as his leadership and courage. “I will be forever proud of my father and especially those who served beside him,” Mike Martinez said. The ENMU-R ceremony also included some information about the history of the Veterans Day commemoration in the United States and the presentation of certificates to about 30 ENMU-R students and staff who have served in the armed forces. That included ENMU-R President and Air Force veteran Shawn Powell, kneeling beside Martinez. (Lisa Dunlap Photo)
