Community members support local businesses by shopping at those establishments on a regular basis, but residents will have an additional way to back local shopkeepers by volunteering for “Shop Small Sweep.”

The event, on Saturday, Nov. 16 from 8 to 11 a.m., will feature volunteers sprucing up businesses by doing such tasks as picking up trash, washing windows and sweeping storefronts.

“Shop Small Sweep” is being organized by Keep Roswell Beautiful, the Roswell Hispano Chamber of Commerce, the Roswell Chamber of Commerce and MainStreet Roswell as a means to show community support as Roswell’s small businesses prepare for Small Business Saturday. That annual national event takes place the first Saturday after Thanksgiving (Nov. 30 this year).

Promoted by the U.S. Small Business Administration, Small Business Saturday — the day following Black Friday — is designed to encourage people to shop locally at their community’s small businesses, which are an important part of the local tax base that helps fund essential city services to citizens.

The city of Roswell encourages people to support local businesses on Small Business Saturday and during the upcoming holiday shopping season, as well as throughout the year, according to a press release issued by the city.

Volunteers for “Shop Small Sweep” will meet at the Roswell Chamber of Commerce, 131 W. Second St., at 8 a.m. to check-in and then work at a local business until 11 a.m.

Volunteers are asked to register at surveymonkey.com/r/smallsweep so organizers can best prepare an adequate number of supplies and plan assignments. Business owners with projects the volunteers can work on should sign up at surveymonkey.com/r/smallsweepbus.

Any other organization that would like to partner in sponsoring this event can contact Thalia Pantoja at t.pantoja@roswell-nm.gov, or 575-637-6238.
