Ruben Esquivel, superintendent of the city’s South Park Cemetery, places flags Monday morning beside about 150 graves in the cemetery’s dedicated section for veterans, the Gen. Douglas L. McBride Veterans Cemetery. The day is only one of five days each year when both east and west gates of the cemetery are open to accommodate visitors. He said that this year’s holiday holds special significance for him because he recently visited a friend in California, a Gulf War veteran diagnosed with a serious illness whom he first met when they attended elementary school here. “Today I am just honored to be here and honored for him,” Esquivel says. “It is important to pay tribute.” (Lisa Dunlap Photo)
