A crash at U.S. Highway 70/380 and Brown Road on Wednesday night led to the death of Katelynn Marie Joswiak Kelly, of Hagerman, and the injury of a child passenger.

Officer Ray Wilson, public information officer for the New Mexico State Police, confirmed in a press release that Kelly, 20, and a child passenger were traveling north on Brown Road when the 1991 Chevy Truck they were in failed to stop at the intersection of Brown Road and U.S. 70/380.

The press release states that the Chevy truck was hit by a 2004 Dodge truck heading east on U.S. 70/380.

State Police and local law enforcement agencies responded to the crash around 8 p.m. blocking off the intersection from Avenue E to Mark Road and in surrounding areas.

According to the press release, “Kelly sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Office of the Medical Investigator. The child was transported to an area hospital for injuries sustained in the crash. Their (the child’s) injuries and current condition are not known …”

Wilson said the child’s identity will not be released for privacy reasons. From the initial investigation, he said it seems that alcohol was not involved and seatbelts were used.

The driver of the Dodge truck was a 48-year-old man from Artesia.

Wilson said he was not injured, and is not “facing charges” and will not be “immediately identified.”

The investigation is ongoing.
