A crash that took the life of a 20-year-old female driver has now resulted in the loss of another occupant from the same vehicle, an 8-year-old female child, according to an email on Saturday evening from Officer Ray Wilson, public information officer for New Mexico State Police.
The child involved in Wednesday night’s crash on U.S. Highway 70/380 and Brown Road succumbed to her injuries on Nov. 15 at University Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas, Wilson stated in the email.
According to previous reporting in the Daily Record, the 20-year-old crash victim is Katelynn Marie Joswiak Kelly, of Hagerman. However, Wilson said on Saturday night, the identity of Kelly’s 8-year-old passenger has not yet been released by State Police.
Officer Wilson confirmed previously in a press release that Kelly and a child passenger were traveling north on Brown Road when their vehicle, a 1991 Chevy pickup truck, failed to stop at the intersection of Brown Road and U.S. 70/380 and was hit by a 2004 Dodge truck heading east on U.S. 70/380.
Wilson said the driver of the truck, a 48-year-old Artesia man who is not being identified at this time, was not injured during the crash and is not currently facing any charges.
According to Wilson, all occupants were wearing seatbelts and alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash. Wilson said the investigation is still ongoing.
