One woman is dead and a male suspect has what is believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head following an alleged homicide and attempted suicide Thursday night north of Roswell.

Charles Yslas, chief deputy with the Chaves County Sheriff’s Office, said Friday the Pecos Valley Regional Communications Center received a 9-1-1 call at 11:22 p.m. from a female at a Hidalgo Drive location. The female claimed she was being held against her will by a male with a gun, who was threatening to kill her and himself.

When deputies arrived, they found the female shot to death and a male with what is believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, Yslas said.

The male, identified as Steven Madsen in a post on the official Facebook page of the Chaves County Sheriff’s Office, was flown to a hospital to receive medical attention for his wound. An arrest warrant was served on Madsen for suspected homicide and kidnapping charges.

Yslas said Friday he could not comment on Madsen’s current condition, a possible motive or further details about the case, which remains under investigation.
