Property taxpayers who have accounts with Roswell Escrow Services, Inc. and are unable to make their first half tax payments by Tuesday will have penalties and interest waived, Charlotte Andrade, Chaves County Treasurer, said Wednesday.

The Treasurer’s Office is willing to work with the 800 property taxpayers who normally make payments through Roswell Escrow Services, Andrade said.

Because of recent events involving Roswell Escrow Services, account holders who can’t make their first half payments by the Tuesday, Dec. 10 deadline will not have to pay the 1% late penalty and 1% interest on those payments.

“So if they want to come in after the first of the year and make payments towards that first half, we will waive that penalty and interest that would have normally been assessed as of Dec. 11,” Andrade said.

A letter notifying account holders of the waiver for Roswell Escrow account holders will be sent out with tax bills.

Andrade said Wednesday that since it was announced operations were suspended at Roswell Escrow Services, Inc. — due to an ongoing state investigation — her office has received numerous calls.

“We’ve had a lot of calls, especially from those on fixed incomes and they were a little concerned that they did not have the money to meet their tax obligation by the 10th,” Andrade said.

The waiving of fees, she said, is to show that the county is willing to help those taxpayers make their payments.

Chaves County will also be working with a new local escrow company, sharing information with the company that the county has on those taxpayers who have Roswell Escrow accounts, and referring people to that company to possibly establish an account.

Andrade said that because Roswell Escrow Services is in litigation, the new company is not assuming the company’s accounts, but will work with those affected by the Roswell Escrow Services temporary closure.
