A Christmas celebration lit up downtown Main Street Saturday night as Roswell’s annual Holiday Light Parade took to the streets.

“I think it is a wonderful activity to build those kind of memories that children have from when they are growing up that are really precious,” said Kathy Lay, executive director of MainStreet Roswell, the nonprofit that organizes the community event. “I think it enriches the community culture and the quality of life. It builds community pride and strength and a sense of how much people appreciate living in Roswell.”

Santa Claus made an early appearance in the parade that ran from Fourth Street to Ninth Street and drew hundreds of observers. Something for everyone was offered by the 30 entries: nativity scenes, numerous extraterrestrials, bands, a boat, sleighs, semi trucks and motorcycles, decorated sports utility vehicles, costumed Disney and cartoon characters, several large snowmen, antique cars and fire trucks glowing with colorful bulbs, and even a Grinch.

The trophy winners for Best Theme (Sounds of the Season), Best Color, Best Lights and Best Crowd Appeal were expected to be announced by late Saturday night on MainStreet Roswell’s Facebook page.
