The New Mexico Department of Agriculture will provide grants before the end of June to entities engaging in soil health education and outreach efforts.

The grants are part of the Healthy Soil Act that took effect in April and can be made directly to nonprofits or to one of four eligible entities: New Mexico State University extension offices, soil and water districts, tribal entities or land grants and acequias. Individuals or for-profit organizations would have to work through an eligible entity.

The grants must be submitted to the state Agriculture Department by Jan. 15. A pool of $200,000 in funding has been made available for the 2019-20 fiscal year.

The funded efforts could be geared toward youth, agricultural producers, technical trainers or other members of one of the eligible entities. The initiatives must relate to five soil health principles mentioned in the Healthy Soil Act.

More information is available on the department’s website, www.nmda.nmsu.edu.
