The first meeting of the year for the oldest club in town, the Roswell Women’s Club, brought news for the club and information about the Roswell Air Center.

The guest speaker was Roswell Air Center Manager and Deputy Director Mark Bleth, who talked about changes in the last year and plans for the Air Center’s future.

These plans include his hopes to soon have a direct flight to the Air Center’s sister airport in Denver, Colorado. He also talked about grants that the air center applied for and explained renovations and expansions planned, including a new secure parking lot.

Asked if there will be a fee for it, Bleth confirmed that there would be, most likely. However, he said it won’t be like Albuquerque with its $12-a-day fee, but would more likely be around $3 a day, to cover the basic costs like security and lights.

Bleth pointed out that all airports charge for parking.

Bleth said that the Air Center’s new restaurant includes a full bar and some new equipment was installed on Tuesday. “This restaurant and bar is the only one on the south side,” he said. “This is not only for transients, but a destination restaurant.”

Bleth was asked about renovations and changes in the waiting area of the airport and said that the plans were to build a T-shaped area with security.

After Bleth’s talk, the the meeting continued.

One of the highlights for the club this year is the New Mexico General Federation of Women’s Clubs State Convention. The Roswell Women’s Club is hosting the event.

“This is the first time in our history,” Club President Sonia Phillips said. The convention will be in Roswell, April 16-18.

The Roswell Women’s Club meets every first Wednesday at noon at Los Cerritos Mexican Kitchen and is accepting new members. For information, email debfed@cableone.net or sharsllr@aol.com, or call Debbie Fedric at 575-623-3875 or Sharon Lombardi at 575-627-7799.
