In the early morning hours of Friday, January 10, 2020, our Heavenly Father called his faithful servant Dorothy, home to His Glory.

Five days prior to her 86th birthday, Dorothy Pearl Lucas was surrounded by her loving family first born Dwayne Atwell and wife Cindy, second born Karen Storey and husband David, and third born, Ward Atwell and wife Judi, as God called her home.

Dorothy Pearl Lucas was born January 15, 1934, to James Howard Vail and Lilly Garrett Vail, in Fort Collins, CO. She attended school there and began college before meeting her first husband, Wayne A. Atwell, who was in the United States Air Force. As they married and began their family, the Air Force took them around the globe to California, Oregon, Alaska, Iowa, Nebraska, Roswell, Germany and back home to Roswell.

In Roswell, Dorothy met and married Joseph R. Lucas, the previous owner of Ballard Funeral Home. Dorothy worked as office manager also at Ballard until her retirement twenty years later.

Dorothy was a master embroiderer and knitter, and she won numerous blue ribbons at The Eastern New Mexico State Fair for her works of Art. She was an avid, lifelong Denver Broncos fan and supporter. Go Broncos! She loved puzzles and playing Yahtzee with her family. Dorothy had fond memories of being a member of The American Business Association of Roswell, as well as serving as the ABWA Vice President and President. She also loved reading every minute she could and eventually acquired her own personal library to surround her in her home.

Dorothy lived in her home, Peachtree Retirement and eventually Mission Arch Care Center in the Sunshine Unit. She was blessed by loving, caring and giving nurses, CNAs and Hospice Care. We will never forget them.

Preceding Dorothy to meet the Lord were her parents, brother Bill Vail and wife Faye; her husband’s Wayne Atwell and Joseph Lucas and her beloved nephew Nikolas Martin.

Surviving Dorothy are her loving family: Dwayne and Cindy Atwell, grands Krista Avenenti and husband Stewart with great-grands Jake and Avery Avenenti; grands Kenny and Brittany Atwell with great-grands Emma and Remington Karen and David Storey; grands Linsey, Steven and Natalie, Ward and Judi Atwell; grands Samantha and Eric Weaver with great-grand Ashlyn; grands Jillian and Henry Willis with great grands Brooklyn and Jackson. Also surviving are her sister “Little Sis” Nancy Nikolas and her son Noel and family.

Dorothy lived her earthly life to hear our Heavenly Father say, “Well done, well done my good and faithful one. Welcome to the place where you belong. Well done, well done My beloved child.” We love you, Mom – You’re Home.

May your prayers, love and caring be directed to the Roswell Assurance Home.

There will be no services held for Dorothy her family had a private celebration of her life.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Ballard Funeral Home and Crematory. An online registry can be accessed at www.ballardfuneralhome.com.
