The City of Roswell has begun the process of creating new art from an old and recognizable object.

The city is looking for an artist to create a sculpture using a rocket-shaped piece of playground equipment that is more than 50 years old, according to a press release issued by the city Monday.

The rocket playground equipment was originally installed at Spring River Park in the 1960s.

In order to upgrade the safety features of the playground equipment, the rocket was decommissioned and replaced with a newer model in 2019, at what is now Spring River Zoo.

The intent of the project is to create an outdoor sculpture that captures the spirit of Roswell’s space-related themes and serves as an eye-catching landmark offering a photo opportunity, according to the press release.
