Letter: Lawmakers should have a ‘functioning brain’ — at least

It’s typical of our conceptually challenged State House that they could even be considering something so outlandish as the infamous Red Flag Law. Plausible example: Your neighbor, seeing you yell at your dog, reports you as being dangerously violent, whereupon the authorities invade your home and confiscate your guns, with no due process or presumption of innocence or any other constitutionally guaranteed rights, and with slim chance of ever getting your rightful property back unless you can afford to spend many thousands of dollars on lawyers.

I can pretty well guarantee that this law, and similarly idiotic laws already enacted in other states, will shortly be overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court as unconstitutional, so basically our legislators are doing what career politicians do best: wasting their time and our money.

Would it be expecting too much real work of them to ask them to sit down sometime and read the U.S. Constitution? Or to try to understand (this part is hard for some, apparently) that outlaws by definition live outside the law, so that nothing is to be gained by taking guns from people who would like to be able to defend themselves against outlaws, while leaving the outlaws well-armed?

We really ought at least to require that our legislators have a functioning brain.
