The Historical Society for Southeast New Mexico presents “I’ll Make Ya Famous” as part of the popular Sunday Funday series. The event will be Sunday, Feb. 9 from 3-4 p.m. at the museum archive building, 208 N. Lea Ave. There is no fee for the presentation.

Tiffanie Owen, instructional coordinator for Lincoln and Fort Stanton Historic Sites, will discuss how a certain young outlaw, who had been largely forgotten in the decades after his death, was resurrected to become a pop icon and historic legend. Without Billy the Kid, the adobe buildings and the history of Lincoln might have dissolved with time. Instead, Billy is largely responsible for bringing approximately 60,000 visitors to Lincoln from all over the world each year.

Owen is a native New Mexican with ancestral roots in Lincoln County going back five generations. She feels that she has one of the most important jobs at the Historic Sites.

Owen said, “A big part of my job as instructional coordinator is to organize and lead educational tours at Lincoln and Fort Stanton. Unfortunately, a lot of schools can’t afford to come to the sites, so whenever possible, I travel to the school and speak to the kids in their classrooms.

“It is so important that I spark some excitement and interest in history because these kids are the ones who are going to keep Lincoln’s story alive and help us preserve and protect our historic places.”
