Roger K. Burnett, from the Sunrise Optimist Club of Roswell, was one of four Optimist Club members to be honored recently by Optimist International.

Burnett — a former educator and administrative director for the Historical Society for Southeast New Mexico — has brought in 41 members to his club since it chartered in 2000.

James E. White, District Club fitness advisor for the New Mexico/West Texas District stated, “Only about 11% of all Optimist members ever bring in even one new member. I sometimes think my 30 members in 40 years is a great accomplishment until I find someone like Roger (Burnett) that has great dedication to our organization. Great job and again, thank you.”

Burnett will receive his 40-member pin from Optimist International in the near future.

Also receiving the international honor were Marlene Phillips, a certified international trainer who is active in several Optimist Clubs in Southwestern Ontario; Jack Barclay from the Las Cruces Optimist Club; and Gloria Irigoyen, president of the Camino Real Optimist Club.

“Many more Optimists in the district have worked to bring in new members, but these stand out for their work to strengthen our work to spread the philosophy of Optimism. Be like these great Optimists and set a goal to sponsor a new Optimist in 2020,” White said.
