One thing about Dexter girls basketball coach, Arthur Cobos — he can coach. The proof is in state tournament appearances. The last two years, he took the boys’ basketball team to the state tournament and the Elite Eight.

This season, he has taken a team that had a new coach, each season in the last three years and transformed them into a state playoff team with a 16-11 record. Cobos’ streetball and position-less basketball has caught on.

Dexter has the enviable position of being ranked the No. 14 team and traveling to Tohatchi to take on the No. 3-ranked team. Both teams have never played each other. The Cougars are a pressing team and they’re 3,000 feet in elevation. Dexter will have to be in shape.

Dexter had the injury bug bite them this season, but should be relatively healthy for this game. Dexter has won most of their games off of their defense. They had a lot of steals that turned into points.

“I think it is a good thing,” Cobos said. “I said I wanted to face a team I haven’t played yet. If we can limit turnovers and do what we have been doing, and our shooting improves a little bit, we will be there.”

Cobos’ motivational ploy was showing his team the fight between Holly Holm and her upset win of Ronda Rousey.

“I showed our girls the message about the New Mexico native Holly Holm,” Cobos said. “How she pulled off an upset against Rousey. I told them rankings are just a number at this point. If we can work our plan and trust our practice, it doesn’t matter about the height. Records don’t matter.”

Dexter will play at 6 p.m. today at Tohatchi.
