A teenager has been arrested in a Wednesday night hit and run accident in downtown Roswell that left one pedestrian dead.
Saul Garcia, 17, was charged with one count of leaving the scene of an accident involving death or personal injury, according to a press release issued Thursday by the Roswell Police Department. Todd Wildermuth, public information officer with the Roswell Police Department said an amended criminal complaint in the case was filed later in the day against Garcia to include a charge of homicide by vehicle.
No electronic court records were filed in Magistrate Court before press time Thursday.
The accident happened in the 800 block of North Main Street at about 9:20 p.m. when the vehicle Garcia was driving allegedly struck Tyree Williams, 31, who was crossing the street at the time.
Garcia, who investigators believe was traveling 52 to 64 mph in a 35 mph zone at the time of the accident, then allegedly fled the scene. Williams was pronounced dead at the scene, the press release states.
Another person in the area followed Garcia as he drove away from the accident, enabling police to locate Garcia and the vehicle in another part of the city, according to the press release.
